This proverb stresses the importance of writers. The sword stands for kings and soldiers. The pen stands for the writer.
Both the kings and the writers aim to bring in a change in the society. The weapons are different. Both the sword and the pen are able to cause fear to bring in changes whenever and wherever necessary.
The means and ways to achieve the end in both are different. Through invasions and batter the glory is attained. But it has to witness a lot of bloodshed on either side. It is not the case with the pen. It only appeals. There is no bloodshed in the case of writer’s appeal.
When the sword pierces the heart, the pen does not. Sword brings in change without life. But the pen does it with life. It was the power of sword that threatened Bharath. But the British had to surrender ultimately. The appeals made by’ the great personalities like Mahathma Gandhi, Subramaniya Bharathi and others drove away the British from this holy land.
