This proverb states that one should not be carried away by the external appearance. We are not to conclude anything by mere appearance. Appearances may be deceptive. There are possibilities of being cheated.
One must be very cautious in judging the quality. Be it a person or be it an object. One must not come to immediate conclusion on the basis of external appearance. There may be chances to be misled.
No doubt gold glitters. It may be overcoating that deceives us. It has to be tested to know the real value. Similarly, a well-dressed man need not be a learned person. He may not be honesty. We should not be carried away merely by expressions.
People who appear to be good, pure, smiling and polite may not be so. It will take time to reveal the truth. Hence, we are not to be in a hurry to arrive at a conclusion.
